Since the invention of the telephone, generally attributed to Alexander Graham Bell, who filed the patent in 1876 (a patent that was nevertheless taken from Italian-American Antonio Meucci, who reportedly could not afford to pay the $10 (about $300 in 2025 dollars) for his promised patent after 1874), this small, now commonplace device has evolved considerably. In 1983, Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola invented the cell phone. But the project had actually begun 10 years earlier, in 1973… It was on October 13, 1983, that Bob Barnett, then president of Ameritech Mobile Communications, made the first commercial wireless call using a Motorola Dynatac 8000X from inside a Chrysler convertible at Soldier Field in Chicago, to Alexander Graham Bell's grandson, who was in Berlin, Germany.
Twenty-four years after the first mobile phone was released, Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone, the iPhone 2G, on January 9, 2007, and this small technological revolution would change our habits, even our daily lives! During this same period, internet phones began to appear, offering new possibilities for businesses while also drastically reducing their cost. The traditional telephone line was replaced by an internet connection, and this change also radically altered our habits, integrating applications into our cell phones and software on our work computers to simplify our relationships with the world.
Nowadays, a host of tools are available to us to "call" and even "see" our contacts on the other side of the world with disconcerting ease. After 150 years of technological evolution, communicating has never been easier!
