What is computer security?

Computer security has become a necessity over time, as malicious attacks are numerous and it is becoming more and more sophisticated to counter them. We work and live in a connected world where more and more devices talk to each other, are programmed to facilitate our daily lives and become accessible from almost anywhere!

If you're able to log into your computer or camera remotely from your phone or computer, a hacker ("hacker") with a little ingenuity and will probably can too. It is for this reason that it is necessary to guard against these attacks which are often simple mechanisms which will lead you to click on an illicit link. You will need to take a minimum of precautions to avoid losing everything!

There is a golden rule to follow at all times: "If you don't know the origin of the message or if you have a simple doubt, do not click!"

IP telephony and your computers uses the Internet, so you must ensure that your computer network or your connected devices to it are well protected by a good firewall, by anti-virus and anti-spam. It is often a first point of entry for hackers ("hackers"). An anti-virus will protect you against malware and an anti-spam against questionable mechanisms such as clicking on a link to upload a document or directing you to a fake web page resembling your bank. It is a minimum of protection to have. Preferably, use commercial products. Free products are limited, sometimes even ineffective or even malicious! Then, you have to make sure that the "firmware" (firmware) of your router, modem, switches, connected devices (WiFi and bluetooth) and other network equipment are also up to date, the firewalls ("firewalls" ) well activated. Please also change the default passwords of your internet routers and WiFi if you have not already done so. If you have a server, make sure that security updates are regularly made. This is the basis of the security of your computer equipment, whether at home or in business.

Then there is "educational" learning, a discipline that will force you to form healthy, common-sense habits. At PointCA we offer "Security Audits". An audit will analyze the technology you use to work, but also your habits. That you have the best server in the world with the best protections of the moment. If access to this computer is available to everyone, your software protections may not be sufficient. It is very easy to hack into a machine physically if one has access to it and it will be very difficult to know the sources of the attack if this happens. Ideally, this device should therefore be located in a room with restricted access! And that's just one of many flaws...

Security is therefore a matter of common sense with a mix of good habits and the use of effective tools. For more than 20 years, we have been offering solutions and audits for your security. With the arrival of Bill 25 in Quebec since September 2022, you must (and it is an obligation!) … implement security protocols, failing heavy fines and even seeing your insurance premiums skyrocket. Take advantage of the experience of our technicians to provide your business with safe and efficient work tools.
